Universal Orlando’s Skull Island: Reign of King Kong has finally opened as one of the biggest attractions at Islands of Adventure. Universal’s Islands of Adventure surprised visitors Wednesday with the official opening of its newest mega attraction, Skull Island: Reign of Kong. The attraction was built in collaboration with Peter Jackson, the famed director of the 2005 blockbuster King Kong, and is part of a spectacularly themed location that will give guests a face-to-face encounter with the massive gorilla using new enhanced technology.
Universal Orlando’s Skull Island: Reign of King Kong
Skull Island: Reign of Kong’s queue is as essential to the overall experience as the ride itself. The new attraction at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando is an extraordinary blend of theme, set design, 3D screens and animatronics, with a immense, intricately designed temple for a show building as well as a face-to-face with Kong himself that’s astoundingly powerful. The high-capacity attraction might be too slow to be a genuine thrill ride, but it’s still a thrilling experience because of the attention to detail seen throughout the entire project.
And it all starts with an old lady in the waiting area.
She stands alone in the dark, dressed like a old sage yelling at no one in particular. A robotic look transforms her gnarled face as she keeps chanting Kong, Kong, until her voice reaches a crescendo KONG, KONG!!
Mist surrounds the entire group of guest as they are ushered deeper into the deaths of a dark and terrifying cavern. Sound of drums and voices chanting in some sort of native tongue. Several crates carrying howling animals are being transported, including one made of glass that holds a Carnictis — a giant, disgusting slug whose head is little more than a gaping mouth full of sharp teeth and which eats the dead and wounded.
All of this and you haven’t even gotten to your ride vehicle!!
Make no mistake Universal has out done themselves with this new attraction.
“King Kong is a Hollywood movie legend and a huge part of both our history and our future,” said Executive Producer of Universal Creative Mike West. “He gives us the opportunity to tap into everything that makes our film history so special and everything that makes our theme park attractions so spectacular.
It begins as guests are transported deep into a wild and mysterious world, where their mission is to discover creatures of unknown origin – but where they are soon fighting for their own survival. Their journey will take them through an ancient temple inhabited by hostile natives, a perilous jungle ruled by prehistoric creatures, a foreboding underworld of caves concealing unspeakable terrors – and face-to-face with the colossal Kong himself.
Known as “the eighth wonder of the world,” Kong has been called “the experience for which movies were invented.” Since first appearing on screen in 1933, “King Kong” has been re-made twice – each time on a tremendous scale – earning seven Oscar and three Golden Globe nominations.
