Universal Orlando’s Dragon Challenge Closing Sept 5th. Out with the old and in with the new. That is exactly what Universal Orlando is saying about Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s Dragon Challenge. The two inverted coasters, formerly known as Dueling Dragons, is being replaced by a mysterious new attraction. It will be open at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in 2019.

While the details about this new attraction are still very scarce, Universal Orlando confirmed that the ride will be unlike anything they’ve ever done before. It will be fun for the entire family. Universal did say it will include interaction with “Potter” characters. Also, that Universal Creative is collaborating with Warner Brothers and its design team. Same as with previous Wizarding World attractions in Orlando, California and Japan.

The original design of Dueling Dragons had two trains on separate tracks racing past each other. This design created a series of twisting near misses, which, at one time, were touted as being inches apart. In 2011, there were reports of accidents and related injuries, including the loss of an eye of one passenger. Later that year, IOA began dispatching the trains at different times, eliminating the close encounters.
What Will Replace the Dragon Challenge?
The new attraction will be one of the most highly-themed coaster experiences. It will combine a new level of storytelling with an action-packed adventure. Surely, also there will be a few surprises along the way.
The new ride will help make 2019 an even more exciting year in Orlando. Competitor Disney is set to open its Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land that year as well. Universal Studios plans to open a thrill ride called Fast & Furious — Supercharged. It is under construction at the former site of the Disaster attraction. The company also has two new hotels in the works on International Drive at the former site of Wet ’n Wild.
To make way for this new experience, Universal Orlando’s Dragon Challenge is closing Sept. 5th. The last day of operation will be Monday, September 4.
